Re: Mediation Course

Dear Steve:

As I reflect back on your mediation training course that I took in May, I am struck by its practicality. In these few months I have already been able to implement many of the practical mediators' devices that you and the other faculty suggested during the course. As you know, I previously had taken extensive mediation training elsewhere and enrolled in your course because I wanted more exponential, "hands on" training. The ample role playing, which was an integral part of your course, was excellent for that purpose. I appreciated the personalized coaching you provided by having practicing mediators observe every role play and give the participants extensive comments and feedback. For a practicing lawyer and mediator, this type of direct critique is very welcome and essential for skills improvement.

One aspect of your training which was quite unusual in my experience was the number of non-lawyer professionals that attended. Perhaps this is atypical of your mediation training sessions, but I felt it to be a refreshing enhancement to the training. The therapists and other participants who do not practice law bring a different perspective to the mediation process form that which lawyer-mediators usually have. There were many memorable instances in our role plays and discussion because we had such a diverse group.
